Cleaning and Improving the Appearance of Stamped Concrete
Appearance might not be everything but it is important when it comes to your home. In fact, good curb appeal and landscaping can increase a home’s perceived value. It can even make your house sell faster! Even if you don’t intend to sell anytime soon, you still should still care about your home’s exterior. While you may focus on the roof or siding, one aspect you should never overlook: the concrete.
Cracked, uneven, damaged, or missing concrete can instantly ruin a home’s aesthetic. While concrete is a very durable material, it can still be stained and damaged if not properly cared for.
Caring For Stamped Concrete
Stamped concrete is a popular choice for outdoor patios because of its durability and resistance to cracking. But like with all outdoor materials, dirt, dust, leaves, organic material, and other debris can build up on the surface and cause staining or discoloration.
The same way you routinely vacuum a rug or wash the windows, you should routinely clean and seal your stamped concrete. Never use a pressure washer––it will break down the sealcoat and can potentially damage the surface. Instead, use a soft wash to gently clean and remove dirt and debris trapped in the crevices or a regular garden hose to rinse your concrete paired with a push brush with a small amount of soap. You should clean your stamped concrete at least once a month; more often if it is exposed to heavy foot and vehicle traffic.
Go the extra step with preventative maintenance and have your concrete sealed every 2 to 3 years. A sealant will protect concrete against premature cracking, staining, and deterioration. A good sealant will also enhance the safety, appearance, and performance of your concrete surface.
