Make Your Home Safe For Trick-Or-Treaters

Have A Safe Halloween

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “Halloween?” Pumpkins? Costumes? Haunted houses? Decorations? Candy? Regardless if you love this spooky season and all its ghostly glory or if you hate Halloween and can’t wait for it to be over, there’s a likely chance that children will be ringing your doorbell come the 31st. Make sure your home is safe for all those little monsters with these easy safety tips!

Clear A Path & Make Sure It’s Lit

Most parents know that if your front lights are off, it means you are not passing out candy. However, for those ready to hand out tasty treats, turn on both the front lights and any lights that shine on your driveway to provide a well-lit path to the door. Clear dead branches, bicycles, toys, hoses, potted plants, lawn furniture, and–most importantly–Halloween decorations away from any walking paths to prevent trip hazards.

Avoid Open Flames

Jack-O-Lanterns are a Halloween staple but those tea candles are easy to miss if you’re not paying close enough attention. Keep open flames away from walking paths. When a large group walks up, someone could accidentally knock over a lit candle or a flapping piece of material could easily catch fire. And remember to blow out any candles as soon as trick-or-treating ends so you don’t forget!

Comfort Your Pets

Some dogs do great with visitors and some will hear the doorbell and immediately panic. Keep your pets inside and away from the door, and remember to check them frequently between visitors to soothe their anxiety.

Choose Your Candy Wisely

Nut allergies are no joke and many kids can’t accept candy like Snickers, Milky Ways, nougats, Hershey bars with almonds, and peanut M&Ms–all popular giveaways–because of the ingredients they contain. If you offer non-food treats like glow sticks, stickers, pencils, or small toys, inform trick-or-treating by putting out a teal pumpkin.

Fix Broken or Uneven Concrete

Lastly, if your concrete has seen better days consider concrete lifting provided by Bravo! Buffalo. By raising damaged, uneven concrete you reduce the risk of children or their parents tripping and falling on your property.
